Exhausted, But Thankful

This evening, as I was reading an article on my mini ipad, I nodded off and fell asleep.  I find that this is happening almost every night.  My dad and aunt were the same way, once they were in their fifties.  My brothers and I would laugh at them as they snored.  Now I understand.  The thing is, it's only 5:45 p.m.  I could easily climb under the down comforter and flannel sheets in bed!  It feels so late.  I love this time of year, but I get tired so early!  When I was in my thirties, I worried that it was depression, but then realized that it's a seasonal thing.  Once we turn the clocks back, and the days get shorter and colder, I have less energy.

How about you?  Are you feeling sleepy earlier now, too?  The long summer days are behind us.  I so enjoyed spending most of my mornings or afternoons at the lake.  I had always wanted to live somewhere where I could swim in a fresh body of water, someplace within walking distance of my home.  I found it at age 55.  Lucky me!

Do you feel the need to hibernate at this time of year?

  1. Yes! You arent alone. I get so tired and sleepy, then the darkness outside amplifies it. Then I check the clock and its only 6, and it feela like 8 or 9.

    1. Thanks, Kari. I agree. I kind of like it. I used to have a pot bellied pig, and she would eat dinner at 4:00 p.m. and then fall asleep at 4:30 p.m. (She went to bed as it was getting dark. Seemed very sensible to me...

  2. I feel this too! I've been trying to find things to keep me busy after dinner each night so I don't curl up on the couch and nap. If I do, then I don't sleep all night. Tonight I made the first part of my Christmas gifts for my staff and that really helped. I hope you find ways to cope with this new season. Thinking of you! X Chy

    1. Good for you, Chy. I am just going with the sleepiness. I got up, did the dishes, set up the coffeemaker, and went to bed early. I love this time of year.

  3. My problem is the opposite. I go to bed late (sometimes even after midnight) and wake up around 7-7.30 am.
I try to get to bed around 10.30 pm, but I'm not successful yet.

    1. You sound like a night owl, Nil. I think we all have our own internal clocks. I was always the first one to bed in my family, and up at 5:00 a.m.

    1. Greetings, Nowe. Maybe it's just natural. It feels good to go to bed early when it's cold outside.

  5. Oh, definitely. Usually, if I sit down after lunch, I'm almost sure to nod off for a while and wake feeling much refreshed. It's definitely seasonal, our body clocks are more tuned to the seasons and the amount of daylight than we would think.
I just go with the flow!

    1. I think so, too, Joy. I look to the animals. Going with the flow sounds wise to me.

  6. I often feel that way. I do wonder if perhaps we should listen to our bodies and sleep more during the winter months.

  7. Absolutely. I always want early nights and a bit of a sleep in as the weather turnns colder and darker. It is so good when our body moves with the seasons, well, I do feel so. It is a very late spring down under, lots of rain, very little sun, but I love the sound of heavy rain.

    1. I love that sound, too, ratnamurti. (As long as the roof is in good repair!)

  8. Ooh, you got snow! I wondered if you did! Well, you get up quite early, don't you? And you probably do a lot during the day before it gets darks. Which is probably why you feel tired, earlier. I, on the other hand, wake up late and stay up late!

    1. You sound very nocturnal, Bless. I find it interesting to hear how different people have more energy at different times of the day and night. Many of the animals here, (like mountain lions and bobcats,) hunt at night.

  9. I tend to nod off in the early evening as well this time of year. The early darkness and being cuddled up in an afghan might be the cause. We tend to go to bed the same time year round, 9:30 or so, and I am up and about by 4:30 or 5:00am every morning. I love to take my daily walk as the sun comes up. Is that picture from this weekend's snow?

    1. I'm on almost the same schedule as you and your husband are, Anita. That photo was taken last November. We did get some snow over the weekend, but not this much...just enough to make it Christmasy...

  10. It's the scorching Summers here in Australia that sap me of energy, Stephanie. The Winters are so mild here that this is the time I love to be outside. Snuggling in under warm covers on snowy evenings sounds lovely! MegXx

    1. Mild Winters are wonderful, Meg. I know what you mean about the hot, scorching Summers. That's why I started looking at cabins in the mountains. It's so much cooler up here.

  11. It is coming on to summer here. The sun gets up earlier, and so do I. More energy and more hours of daylight to do things. I am sure we humans need to let our bodies respond to the light and the seasons.

    1. That's how I feel, emw. We have some sun today, which is a pleasure. I really miss the warmth of it at times.

  12. Yes, I also feel the need to slow down and rest a lot during the darker months. It is already so so dark here in Scotland (with the darkest days still ahead of us). I don't necessarily feel more tired but somehow my daily rhythm changes and I cram in less into my days.

  13. At this time of year it is so easy to just hunker down in an evening. On Monday I went for a run with a friend just as dusk was falling and it gave me so much more energy. I find I'm tired quite early in an evening, but then I start work at 7.30am most days. X

  14. I am so glad that I read your post. I have been getting tired really early too and it has worried me. I've been forcing myself to stay up until 9:00 or 9:30. I'm feeling ready for bed by 8:00.. I do get up by 5:30 AM..Maybe it's a seasonal change the clock thing which I never thought about.

    1. Hi gluten free, I'm sorry I didn't see this comment until today. I agree that it's a seasonal change. It seems normal and healthy to me.
