Avoiding Scams as a Senior

More seniors than ever are reporting being tricked and robbed by predators, relatives, and “friends.”  As my father became elderly, I was upset to find out how many people close to him had taken advantage of his kindness, prosperity, and trust.  He became naive, and trusted people who my mother would have vetted when she was alive.  If I pointed out to him that someone was stealing from him, he could become like a little boy and cry, “No!”

Because seniors often have money set aside in a retirement account, certain people may try to gain access to it.  When I was a customer at our local credit union, a few people who worked in card services tried to swindle me out of money through a website overcharging for hotel rooms. Fortunately, I provided screenshots of the advertised rate and the hotels one site’s jacked up rate as proof.  The credit union had to refund my money.

The woman on the phone tried to intimidate me by yelling and through intimidation.  “This is a scam” I replied, hanging up the phone.  I reported it to a government agency, and they  investigated.  My money was returned.  After another episode that happened on a cruise, I closed all my accounts.  An elderly woman standing in line in front of me was also closing hers.   Sometimes the best thing we can do is to walk away from manipulators.

Have you experienced any scams as a senior?  How did you handle it?

Warm Clothes For Winter

While in Norway, I purchased one of their beautiful traditional sweaters.  It is so warm, thick and cozy!

The matching gloves are exceptional quality.  I have been wearing them in the mountains, they are double knit.

The above slippers are from a quaint shop carrying lovely hand knits in Iceland.

These gorgeous hand knit sweaters are made with Icelandic wool.  They really cut the wind and insulate the body.  I have been wearing layers each day, and have put the flannel sheets back on the bed.  The throws that I knit and crocheted add a comforting warmth as we sleep.

How is the weather where you live?  Are you making soups and stews?  Hope you are staying warm, or cool for the Aussies.

Traveling in EuropeTo Celebrate Turning Sixty

Our London tour group enjoyed a delicious lunch upstairs, at The White Lion.  I chose the most flavorful meat pie.  It tasted oh so British, with a divine buttery crust and brown gravy.

The bathroom was just gorgeous.  I loved the hand painted sinks, carved framed mirrors and attention to detail.

Look at that wallpaper!  The tiles and doors were so pretty, too.  That was my first time eating in a pub.  What fun!  I would say we started at the top.

I have more photos to show you, but am having issues uploading them, so until next time…

I Love London

While visiting London last month, I took a three day tour pre cruise with some of my fellow passengers.
We all stayed at The Raddison Bleu Hotel.  The tour bus picked us up each morning and took us to various locations.

I met with my  friends to celebrate our birthdays.  They have the most gorgeous flat in London!  I took the bus there from my hotel, and really enjoyed the scenery.  The view and dinner that we shared were both spectacular.  Osky made the delectable lamb, garlic rice, and beans, and Richard baked us our scrumptious from scratch carrot cake.  I ate every bite.  It was so much fun to see them.

We had spectacular weather!  I was expecting rain, but the sun was shining, and we never needed an umbrella.

My sweet friend Sara from our MGM days met me for dinner the night I arrived. She is so reliable and dependable.  We had a fantastic conversation, as we always do.  We met backstage over forty years ago.

Taking What You Learned on a European Vacation Home

Although we didn’t actually eat any pizza on my last trip to Italy, I did feel inspired to copy one of my favorite breads from a lovely restaurant around the corner from our bed and breakfast.  I dug up my favorite pizza recipe, refridgerated the dough overnight, and did my best to duplicate the olive oil and fresh rosemary bread.  It came out really well.  The chef in Umbria sprinkled coarse salt over the top, which added wonderful flavor and texture.  I’m pretty sure it was Mediterranean Sea salt. Ah!

This was taken the night we ate dinner outside at the cooking school.  The woman next to me and I had just purchased new sun dresses at the local Farmers’ Market.  They were so reasonably priced!  They make such a nice souvenir.  I paired mine with one of my hand knitted shawls.  Our carefully prepared meal was absolutely divine!  I will never forget it.  We each received copies of the recipes.

These are some of the healthy and luscious grapes that were ripening on the vine at the winery.  Some of the ladies I traveled with ordered half a case of their favorite wine and had it sent home.  I walked through this area each morning, before breakfast.

These are some of the sweet children dressed up in their period costumes from the Medieval Festival that we attended.  They served us several courses of food and wine!  It was a fantastic evening, with hardly any tourists.

Italian Charm

Cooking is a central activity in Italy.  Buying or growing the freshest ingredients, using what is in season, and shopping at the local farmers’ market is typical.  On one of my early morning walks, a lady from our tiny village slowed her car down and asked me if I would like a ride. I could tell she was on her way to buy her groceries down the hill, in town.  That would definitely not happen in LA!  I smiled, thanked her profusely, and declined.  If I had been traveling on my own I would have gone.  We had a schedule to keep.

Beauty was everywhere.  The bright green herbs and vibrant flowers were carefully tended, on a daily basis.  I loved the attention to detail, and the appreciation of nature.  The stone walls made such sweet backdrops.

The above video was taken in Gubbio.  We rode a little red train throughout the magnificent stone city.  It was enchanting.  It’s a place I would love to return to and stay for a few nights.  I spotted the perfect hotel, old and majestic.   In our case, our driver drove us home in an hour and a half, and we enjoyed another sumptuous meal back at the resort.

Cooking School in Italy

One of my favorite experiences while in Umbria was going to cooking school.  Contessa Amelia instructed our group.   She is such a dynamic teacher.  I love her beauty, talent, energy and discipline.  The kitchen is phenomenal, and her assistants were excellent.  Italians seem to value excellence, from what I observed.

Here we are peeling carrots for the vegetarian lasagna.  We made a huge meal, and then all ate it together later that evening, out on the patio.  It was exceptional.

This was taken on our field trip to Perugia.  The sculpture was fabulous.  We saw a wedding at the church, and the bride had on the most exquisite dress.  They were running out after the ceremony.  She had married a handsome, much older man...

Culture Shock

Although I absolutely loved the week that I spent in Italy, I have to admit I did struggle with culture shock.  I normally get up at 5:00 a.m. and make coffee.  Where we stayed, breakfast was not served until 8:00 a.m.  I got into the habit of taking an early morning walk, and then relaxing in the sleek bathtub to kill time.

The trip made me acutely aware that I am one of those Americans who eats all day long…I am a grazer.  In Italy, they eat three meals a day.  They don’t snack.   I normally have a second meal at 10:00 a.m. Even as a child in school, I would wolf down a sandwich at my locker during recess.  My mom packed me two  in my lunchbox for that reason.  She understood that I got hungry mid morning, and that was her idea to tide me over until our school’s lunchtime.  I still eat that way.  I prefer to have very little food in my stomach when I sleep.  I also practice yoga before bed.

Lunch at our resort was 1:00 p.m.  I trained myself to eat a heavier breakfast, since my body is not used to having several hours between meals.  I never quite adapted, I just felt like I was overeating.  The food was exceptional, though.

Dinners were looked forward to and revered.   I dressed carefully and put on smoky eye make-up.  An Italian supper felt like three meals to me.   I enjoyed sitting with our group and devoured the delicious pasta, main courses, local wine, and light and tasty desserts. It was a huge adjustment though, since I normally eat three salads a day, several pieces of fruit, and have dinner at 4:00 p.m.  I did my best to go with the flow, and made sure to enjoy and taste everything.

I felt full for a week upon returning to LA.  I guess the long international flights, extensive layovers, and stress took their toll on my body.  I was sick and weak for several days, though I am normally very healthy.  But, it was all worth it, and I learned that am not as young and invincible as I used to be.  Traveling that far by plane is really not a very natural thing.  I would like to take a transatlantic cruise next year.

In Love With Umbria, Italy

It sounds like many of you share my passion for Italy.  I took many photos…the settings were breathtaking.  This was across from the restaurant where we had dinner on our second evening.

I loved the decor at our villa.  The antiques, orchids, charging station, and candy dish were such attentive touches.

The stone walls of the restaurant made it feel so authentic and charming. The couple in front organized our tour.

We were surrounded by the Tuscan countryside.  The greenery of the vineyards, olive trees, and gardens made it feel like a storybook setting.  The mountain air felt crisp and healthy.  I noticed it as soon as we arrived.

Home From Italy!

Hello Everyone!  I am sorry that I haven’t posted in so long…I was in Umbria, Italy, for a delightful week.  I spent the last week recovering from Covid.  I guess I got it on the long plane trip and lengthy layovers returning home.  All is well now.  The food, scenery, people and sights were out of this world!

I was with a group of nine people.  We stayed together in an incredible villa out in the country.  The tiny village was surrounded by olive trees, vineyards, and lovely Italian gardens.  It felt like we were in a foreign film.

I was able to take long walks in the mornings, before it got too hot.   This restaurant was just a five minute jaunt from our bed and breakfast.  They served us delightful lunches and dinners, as well.  The food was perfect and incredibly colorful and fresh.

What an inspiring time and place!  How have you been?  I plan to catch up on all your blogs this week.  I hope you are enjoying your summer and look forward to hearing from you.

Staying Outside of Palma in Mallorca

On my trip to Mallora last spring, I decided to spend one night in the mountains.  Prices at pensions outside of the tourist areas are much more affordable.   It can be very difficult to get a taxi from the airport in Palma, but I got straight to the front of the line and jumped in one.  I had a friendly female driver and gave her the address to my home for the night outside of the city.

It was a pastoral setting, so I spent my time relaxing, taking walks in the area, stopping for a pizza at the nearby restaurant, (there was only one,) and reading.  The soil and animals looked healthy and natural.

The inn where I stayed had a sparkling pool with a lovely garden.  The sound of the water was so relaxing.  Breakfast, which was included, was a delightful spread with lots of variety.  This bed and breakfast is run by a couple who relocated there.  Their young daughter was with them in the morning; she was such a cutie.  The stonework was impressive, inside and outside the home.

Stumbling upon these sheep excited the knitter in me.  It was such a quiet and peaceful area, in contrast to Palma, Mallorca, where I spent the next three nights.  That was a thrilling finish to my European vacation.  I think when I return, I will stay for a week in Palma.  The hotels, restaurants, and sights were first class.   It just appealed to me on so many levels.  May was the ideal time of year to visit.  It wasn't too crowded, and the temperatures were warm and pleasant.  Summers can be extremely hot there, according to my taxi driver.

Gorgeous Gardens in Santa Barbara

Pulling into the secluded parking lot at The Simpson House Inn, the first thing I noticed was the lush garden.  Everything was bright green and in full bloom.  The privacy around the estate makes it feel rich and serene.  It's situated on a quiet street, just a block from town.

The fresh red roses at the breakfast table were a loving touch.  Last time I was there I sat out on the patio.  The white wicker furniture and floral pillows make it so comfortable.  It's a completely relaxing and rejuvenating environment.

This pathway led me down from my upstairs suite to the main house.  I love the flagstone pathways and healthy ferns.  There is beauty everywhere you look.  It is such an inspiration to stay there.

Taking Amtrak's Pacific Coast Starlight Train Overnight From Seattle to Burbank

After spending the night at The Mayflower Park Hotel in Seattle, I devoured a savory breakfast in their downstairs restaurant.  The front desk arranged for a cab for me to the train station.  We arrived early and I sat on an old wooden bench in the lobby.  I was excited to board the next train headed to Los Angeles: The Pacific Coast Starlight.

In order to qualify for the cheapest rate, I had reserved a roomette several months in advance, through an Amtrak agent.  It was still pricey, (over $700.00, versus a cheap economy flight at $59.00.)  Sitting in Business Class or Coach would have been far more reasonable.   I wanted to have a bed, though, and to experience seeing the California coast from the train.  The trip took two full days and one night.

The meals were delicious.  I had the first lunch delivered to my room, and ate the others in the dining car.  I enjoyed chatting with the travelers at my table about their trip.  One man had moved from England to Thailand, and spent most of his retirement planning trips and on the road.  He had just found out that his train to San Diego was inoperable, and was booking a bus.  They were repairing the tracks further South, including the Meto North line.

Our train arrived in Los Angeles thirty minutes ahead of time!  I got off at Burbank Airport station.  In the future, I would probably get out at Van Nuys Station, which has a waiting room with an attendant.  There is also a luggage cart that will pick you up if you need assistance.  It's well lit, and many customers park their cars there and take the Fly Away Bus to LAX.

All in all, it was a very smooth and pleasant trip.  The view of the sunset in Santa Barbara was spectacular-a highlight of the journey.  I found it a little difficult to sit for so long, but was able to lay down, since I had reserved a roomette with bunk beds.

I Hope I'm Not Turning Into a Wino

When I visited Catalina Island for my birthday, I enjoyed a glass  of  sweet, sparkling wine out on the verandah at the Wrigley Mansion.  There were a few other guests attending Happy Hour, as well.  We had wine, cheese, crackers, cold cuts and fruit.  I loved chatting with them and enjoying the stunning view of the water.  Travelers are such fun people.

When I arrived home, I decided to buy a bottle of the same wine and recreate the experience.  It really does seem to bring out the flavors of my meal.  I just have a small amount, but do enjoy it by the crackling  fire each evening.

The only problem is, it is upsetting my evening yoga routine.  I think I will have to do that in the afternoon, instead.  It's pretty dark and cold at night, anyway.  Not the most ideal time to be stretching on the floor...

Changing Your Travel Plans Due To The Corona Virus

Mallorca

I just called NCL and opted out of the coastal cruise that I had booked with them for next month.  It was set to depart from Los Angeles, sail through San Francisco, and then end in Vancouver.  They sent us a letter stating that with their new Peace of Mind Policy, we could get a 100% credit towards a future cruise.  It has to be booked within a year, and must be used by December of 2022.

I already had made a reservation for a transatlantic cruise in 2021, so if the situation is resolved, I will apply it towards that trip.  I have a travel insurance policy, as well, but it's just basic coverage.  From what I've read, a pandemic is not covered.  I would rather take another cruise at some point, anyway.  I was really looking forward to this one, especially cruising under the Golden Gate Bridge!  Oh well...

I sent an email to the kennel where Lula stays, and explained the situation.  I hope their business isn't suffering too greatly.  This Corona virus in really having a domino effect on people, businesses, and stocks.  I just don't feel safe getting on a cruise ship right now, though.

One of my dancer friends is working as a choreographer in Europe, and he wrote to me that he is desperately trying to get a flight back home to Canada.  Another dancer/writer that I worked with at Dancer Magazine is out floating on a cruise ship near Japan.  No one will allow them into port.  They were supposed to fly home, and then the plans were revoked.  It must be so scary to be in that situation.  They are so far from home.  I am saying prayers for both them and all of the other people affected by this virus.

How about you?  Have you changed any travel plans?  I feel lucky to be able to stay at home, to have a stockpile, and to be able to work remotely.   Life is uncertain.

When A Train Pass Isn't Worth It

The bus stop in Santa Monica at Ocean Avenue and Colorado

I decided I will probably not to use the rest of the days I have left on my California Rail Pass. I didn't realize how many hidden costs there would be. To go to Yosemite, I had to book Lula at the kennel for three nights.  They charge $35.00 a night.  My lodging was $41.00, and hers was $105.00!

It also requires extra gas and train fare to pick up the hard copies of the tickets. Normally you can print out an eticket with Amtrak.. If you are using the California Rail Pass, though, you have to visit a station with a ticket counter.  My station doesn't have one. I have to travel to Van Nuys, Union Station, or Bakersfield.

I also have spent a lot of money on eating out in July. Normally, I cook and prepare all of my meals. It's amazing how quickly those extra expenses add up!  Even though most of the places that I ate were very reasonable, it was still money I normally don't spend each month. I was shocked at the totals.

I've realized that I can just take the city bus to the beach on the weekends, and pack a lunch. That's the cheapest way to go. Santa Monica is as gorgeous and enjoyable as many of the top travel spots in California. I might as well enjoy it. It's only thirty miles from me.

I am a;sp so close to many of the most scenic hiking trails in this area.  The other night I hiked the Pacific Crest Trail with Lula. We went just as the sun was slipping behind the mountains.  It was so cool and relaxing. I normally don't hike in the early evening, but I really enjoyed it. We got back to the car before it was dark.

How is your summer going? Are you any fun, outdoor activities?

Day Two as a Solo Traveler in Yosemite

I woke up very early and took a shower. Bev and another woman who had arrived in our dorm after I fell asleep were in the room by the door. I slept in the center room, which I had to myself.  I brushed my teeth, got dressed, and applied some light makeup. Bev had asked me to wake her up, so I did.

At breakfast, I ran into Howard, the man from Australia, and sat with him again. He was  planning to hike at Yosemite. Bev strolled in, and I introduced them. We ended up riding with Howard in his car, instead of taking the bus as we had planned. The Yarts bus runs regularly to Yosemite from Merced. It's very convenient.  Bev held the map, and I offered my knowledge of the area when they weren't quite sure which direction we should take. Basically, you stay on the main road. It's funny how much you take for granted when you have grown up in California. I've visited most everywhere, so I have an overview of the layout in my mind.

I decided to just look around the park and head back early on the next bus. I had a feeling it was going to get crowded. I wanted to relax at the spa, read, and take a nap. I took another hike on the Bug Trail, by the resort.  Howard and Bev ran into me on the deck after returning from their long hike halfway up The Dome. They were excited about their day. I enjoyed hearing about it.  Next time I plan to spend more time in Yosemite Park.  I also met a friendly rock climber in the sauna. He was friendly, handsome, and  tan, with muscles that rippled. Yosemite is full of people who love the outdoors and who are very fit. There is something about being in excellent shape that makes people very positive and attractive.  We all seemed to be feeling a natural high from the altitude and basking in the power of nature.

I took the Yarts bus back to Merced and boarded my train back to Bakersfield.  There was a man at the station and on my train who was acting very loud, obnoxious, and erratic. His behavior and language made me nervous, so I quietly mentioned it to the woman at the counter.  She offered to walk me to the train and yelled at him, "Keep it down!"  He got off and on at every stop, hanging out of the platform. It was weird.

We arrived in Bakersfield at 10:30 p.m. I drove the hour and a half  back home. I had some trouble finding the freeway on ramp, because they were doing construction. The temporary signs were incorrect. Fortunately, my intuition helped me to figure out what to do, after circling around a few times.  It was a relief to arrive home safely. Next time I think I will take an earlier train. It feels safer.
