Fixing Things At Home

Today I am doing some small tasks that need doing before the rain and snow arrives.  The deck has completely dried, and it looks fabulous!  They used a brown  Australian stain for timber that has the sealant built into the mixture.  It's a relief to know that with the snow we are expecting this weekend, the deck is protected.  The weather stayed warm enough for the workers to complete it and the California sunshine helped, thank goodness!

I also applied a coat of water based clear semi gloss to the door that I had replaced at the cottage.  That's a relief to have done.  I had been putting it off; it really didn't take long.  Next I need to put a coat of sealer on my redwood fence.  It's been almost a year since I've done it.  I'll wait till the weather is warm again, and the wood is nice and dry.

I bought a pair of slippers for winter at TJ Maxx this morning.  My nightgown and pajamas are still in good shape from last year, so I don't need to replace them.  I splurged on some treats: snickerdoodle caramels, mint chocolate cookies, and peppermint bark.  It's fun to have something new for dessert.

I stopped at Target and picked up some staples on sale.  There were very few people there, which was nice.  I bought some Greenies for Lula.  My mom used to give those to my dogs every Christmas, and they loved them.  She was such a shopper!  Lula gobbled hers down this morning.

How are you doing?

  1. I wish we had a Target in our town. Snow this weekend...that will be cozy for you since you are all prepared! A past dog of ours had Greenies when we got some free samples of it...and loved it! But our dog that we have now, doesn't care for them. I guess that might be good since they are expensive. Andrea

    1. We have a new one, Andrea, and it's really nice. I go in the morning, and there is hardly anyone there. Yes, Greenies are expensive. I never bought them until now. I got them half price at TJ Maxx, in memory of my mom.

  2. You are busy getting your homes ready for winter! Good planning on your part. What did you bake? I couldn't tell from the picture, but, it looks delicious, whatever it is! :)

    1. Thank you, Bless. That's an apple crisp. It's actually an old photo, but it's apple season. I like to reuse my blog photos. I still need to create more storage space on my ipad.

  3. Can't believe you are getting snow already. In Philadelphia we had been getting really cold (30 degrees) weather which put an end to all of my flowering plants. Now this week , it's back into the 70's! I was looking at PJ's too, but didn't find any I liked.

    1. It was thirty degrees today at the cabin, too, judee. My flowering plants have wilted from the frost, too. I hope you find some pajamas for the winter.

  4. I never knew that it snowed in California. Good that you are getting repairs and such finished before winter.

    1. Oh, yes, ratnamurti. The snow was gorgeous the past couple of days in Wrightwood. Today it is cold and sunny with bright blue skies.

    1. Hi Joy, Thanks. It was. Greenies are a dental care treat for dogs. Lula just loves them! I rarely buy them, though. They are expensive.

  6. The crumble? Looks delicious. Our homes need TLC to keep us safe during the bad times too.

    1. Hi Frugal, They sure do. It's a relief to be able to stay on top of the home maintenance. There is more work at the cottage that needs to be done.

  7. For a minute I thought you needed staples for a stapler... duhhhhh. You are getting ready to cosy down for the winter but I somehow can't equate California with snow.

    1. Hahaha, Cherie. No, cooking staples. Up in the California mountains it gets very cold. They are snow capped right now. It's very cozy by the fire. I think you would love it.

  8. It sounds like everything will be cozy and warm for you this winter. I was wondering if you would get snow this weekend. Some change in the weather, huh? We are going to get some rain down here which will be much appreciated. I love peppermint bark!

    1. Me, too, Anita. Yes, we had snow on Saturday and Sunday. I love watching the flakes fall through the picture window in the sun room. I hope you got some nice rain for your garden. It makes all the difference.

  9. Gosh, snow expected already! You seem very well prepared though, Stephenie, It's lovely to snuggle down in the warmth of your home and watch the snow falling gently isn't it. We won't be getting any for months, if at all. I'd quite like to see some this Winter. Angie x

    1. Yes, it was gorgeous, PP. It's nice to have everything organized during the cold season. You have to put on lots of woolens to take the dog outside. It's fun for a knitter, though. I hope you get your snow, too.

  10. Wonderful that the deck is stained and ready for your Winter, Stephanie. Snow! Here we've had a couple of very hot days, 34C, and a hint of the Sunmer to come. MegXx

    1. That's exciting, Meg. Summertime is heavenly. I look forward to reading about your adventures. The deck looks fabulous. I just shoveled off the snow, and the stain protected it beautifully.

    1. Yes, it's that time of year, Jules. It feels wonderful to be wearing warm slippers that fit well. My pair from last year were splitting at the seams.
