When Things Don't Go As Planned

I have been spending time each morning in the garden. The energy there is healing, alive, and green. I planted sunflower seeds all along the fence. I love how cheerful they are.

I met with a friend today to knit. I haven't been able to face my knitting for the past month. It's been a difficult time for me personally.  I decided to start something simple, a cotton dishcloth. I finished it this afternoon, and am thoroughly enjoying my dear knitting again.  My confidence had returned.  I'd forgotten how much I enjoy it.

How is your crafting going? Are you making anything?

  1. I love sunflowers. So bright and cheery. We have around ten growing at the moment, from the seeds I got for Lily's birhday. I'm looking forward to seeing them all in flower. X

  2. I hope all is well with you Stephenie.

I’m planning to learn another crochet stitch soon. I have a lot to do at home and in the yard , mainly cleaning.

  3. (((HUGS))) Stephenie. I'm glad your garden is providing you with some comfort and you are able to find joy in your knitting, once again. I bought some wool when I was at Michael's the other day - it was on sale and I limited myself to just 3 balls, because I wasn't planning to buy any yarn! But, wool on sale for 50% off was a good deal, I thought. I haven't decided what to make, yet; I'm thinking of making a pair of socks to keep my feet nice and warm this winter. I am also making my quilts, as well. I keep starting new projects instead of finishing what I've already started!

    1. Hi Bless, Thank you. The garden and my knitting are both very healing. 50% off is an excellent deal. I know what you mean about starting new projects..."Startitis."

  4. Knitting has provided great comfort in the past 3 years since becoming a widow. It has been healing to be able to focus on creating something. I am currently working on a baby blanket. But, I also have a sweater in progress. I hope you feel better, Stephanie. Much Grace to you.

  7. What a beautiful sunflower. I tried to grow them the first year after our re-landscaping was completed, but the golden finches devoured each one! Those greedy little birds did not eat the seeds, but the leaves. While it was fun to watch them, it was scary to seem them take each sunflower down to only a stem. I am just about finished with my first triangle shawl. Each row is over 380 stitches now so I have to set aside a block to time to get through a single row. Something small will be on the needles next. Be good to yourself right now.

    1. Hi Anita, Mine come and eat the seeds. It's fun to watch them. I've never seen them do what you described. I look forward to seeing your shawl.

  8. Congratulations on finding your knitting mojo, Stephanie! I think your breaks at the beach and travels provided some much needed breathing space. :-)

Not much crafting here. Sewing has been on hold for 3+ years. I'm not sufficiently coordinated to operate a sewing machine while standing. Not to mention lack of balance during most of that time! I have been hand-mending while sitting in 15 to 20 minute segments during the past few weeks. It would be nice if my body had decided to function better in cooler weather, but I'll take improvement any day!

We have had a gorgeous spring this year, with nice overnight lows and reasonably comfortable daily highs. Typically, temps reach 110F+ degrees for 10 days or so in mid-June, heralding the entrance of our monsoon/rainy season in early to mid-July (about 8 weeks) that is miserably hot and humid. Humidity almost as bad as central Florida, with much higher temperatures that do not cool down overnight. Yuck! This year, just an occasional hint of humidity to date, but temps are forecast to begin to accelerate by the end of this week. Hope that means a shorter season rather than an extended one!

Looking forward to your knitting projects as they progress!

    1. It certainly does, Cherie. It's amazing how healing it is to sit out there. The air is so fresh, and the plants are so green!

  10. You are more ahead of the game than you realize. I only know how to knit dishcloths. The needles and yarn will tell you what to knit next. You might be a little hard on yourself. You make some beautiful items that have what looks to me like impossible stitches. My goal is to make a pair of socks some day, which is easy-peasy to you - so there's always perspective.
Also, heard about that earthquake and was thinking of you. Glad it was no worse than a tale wag for you and Lula:-)

  11. Sorry you lost your desire to knit. I get lazy sometimes and don't pick mine up for awhile but I keep something going in the basket next to my chair all the time. Right now I'm working on loom knitting hats for the local homeless shelter. I knit them all year, then drop them off over the holidays for distribution. I enjoy seeing your finished items and works in progress. Bobi

  13. Glad that you are feeling like knitting again, Stephenie. I have just cast on a dishcloth after not knitting at all for nearly six months. I need new dishcloths for my own kitchen as so am using up odds and ends of yarns. I think your sunflower is lovely, they are such happy flowers. Meg:)
