How Much Television Do You Watch?

Here is a photo of the new cabin.  I took a picture of the real estate flyer.  It's not a very clear shot, but it gives you a little preview.  I am so excited to have a getaway where the weather is cooler.  This summer has been pleasant, but sometimes we have intense heat, depending on the year.  I have always dreamed of a cabin in the mountains where the air is fresh, and I can BBQ outside.  There's a wonderful swing on the deck overlooking the pine trees.

Today I watched a documentary on the gymnastics abuse scandal on HBO.  I have a free trial with them.  I initially got it to watch a television series called Years and Years. (which I won't be continuing to watch.)  This documentary made me feel sad.  So much of television and media today seems to be centered on abuse.  I try not to focus my mind on it, because then I seem to attract those types of people into my life.  What a shame it took so long for him to be caught.

I have a subscription to Amazon Prime, but I rarely use it.  I may cancel everything, and just stick to reading, writing, watching Youtube, and being in nature.  My family and I used to watch shows like Mary Tyler Moore and Bob Newhart when my Aunt Mary would come to visit us.  We also looked forward to Lawrence Welk.  I loved the music, singing, and dancing.  Those shows were so entertaining and well written.  Maybe I will go back to watching them.  I related to  the characters, and the stories. I watched several television shows a week in those days, and loved all of them.  Things have really changed in the media.

Maybe at this age I am more interested in things that are uplifting.  I am getting back into cooking, now that the weather is a little cooler.  The pomegranates are almost ripe.  It will be a bountiful harvest this year.  I am reknitting an alpaca blanket for my bed.  Lula has gotten her collar caught on it in several places, and it looks very loopy and messy.  This time I will keep it under the duvet, instead of laying it on top of the bed.  I shouldn't let Lula sleep on the bed, but she convinced me.  She sneaks on it when she gets cold, and leans her body against mine.  It makes me laugh.  I am definitely a dog lover.

Back to my original question, How much t.v. do you watch?  Do you find it depressing or uplifting? Is it worth the cost to you?

  1. We were just talking about how we settle in at night to watch a show and end up sometimes having the tv on all night. I suggested we have a night without tv and then just read your post! I personally love stories about real life. Good movies. Comedies. Classics. Documentaries. But things that have a good ending/uplifting/inspiring for sure.

Can't wait to see your pictures of your cabin!

    1. Hi Chy, I like watching those types of entertainment, as well. It makes such a difference if the theme is inspiring.

  2. Hi Stephenie, you can see Lula adores you, as you do her.
We have Netflix which watch from 7pm for about 3 hours until bedtime.
I am not one for watching tv in the day I would rather be doing better things.

  3. Your cabin in the mountain looks like a very secluded place.

I probably spend too much time watching TV, but, I am addicted to news and documentaries.

I love that photo of Lula snuggled up to you. :)

    1. Hi Bless, Yes, it is secluded and private. Yet the dog walking there is incredible! It sounds like you enjoy your tv time. I don't really use mine, but plan to make time to watch things this month, so I don't waste the money.

  4. My hubby is the TV addict. I tend to sit next to him with my laptop on my knee while he watches anything that is on the TV. Occasionally I suggest that he switches it off and we sit in the conservatory with a cuppa. When he goes out I usually put some easy listening music on and knit or craft in some way

    1. That sounds cozy, Cherie. I am looking forward to watching movies by the fire up at the cabin. I will knit or crochet something simple at the same time.

  5. I don't watch a lot of T.V. I don't enjoy intense dramas and the news is just depressing.
I do, however, enjoy some comedy shows and documentaries. I have been watching a documentary recently about the railway in Scotland. The scenery is stunning. X

  6. We find TV programmes can be so depressing lately. We've given up watching the soaps like Coronation Street and Emmerdale because they are now reflecting the nasty side of life which we really don't want to see. Reality TV is mindless and we don't really like cookery challenge shows either. A favourite comedy is Last of the Summer Wine (which is about 20 years old) and we love Gardeners World. It really makes us feel good. I suppose we watch about 2 hours of TV a night (it's never switched on in the daytime) I can think of much nicer things to be doing!
Your cabin look very remote from the picture, Stephenie, I look forward to seeing some more shots....exciting!

    1. Hi Pensive Pensioner, The cabin is not as remote as it looks. You just can't see it from the street. I love the privacy and the neighborhood. Those favorite shows of yours sound excellent.

  7. We watch very little TV . We have a gardening program here which is pretty inspirational, and one comedy which we like. Stopped watching news a while ago when we realised we were yelling at it "Tell the whole story!"

Prefer to read, to sew, to do anything else, really.

And of course, no advertisements mean that we don't feel the need to shop!

I am intrigued about the cabin.....

    1. Hi earthmotherwithin, The cabin dream is getting closer and closer! I am getting more clear on which shows I should not watch. I really love reading and knitting out on the porch. That's great that you don't feel the need to shop. Me, neither.

  8. Your cabin is so pretty and idyllic. I have the t.v. on too much just in the background mostly...like an old person that I used to note when I was young..ha..But I like very old reruns and I don't know why I use the t.v. because I have them already on dvd.
I think I might try going back to the "old days" and not watch anything (even news) and see how peaceful life can be! BTW, sweet Lula. Andrea

    1. Hi Andrea, Yes, I know what you mean. After canceling my TV, I found I didn't miss it. But, now, I am thinking it would be a nice treat to have again. I just need to tune in to the right shows, not the dark and depressing ones.

    1. Hi Meamqueen, I haven't watched tv for at least a decade. I enjoy spending time online, too. There is so much available for free on YouTube. Now that I'm older, it's fun to watch movies on the iPad.

  11. Your cabin looks like a one in story books. I can’t wait to see more photos. 😊

I don’t watch tv a lot. I read news online, so I can sift news from opinions and other fluff. I canceled Netflix, so now I don’t pay for any streaming services.
If I want to watch a particular program, I watch it on YouTube or on PBS website.

  12. I watch very liitle tv, I like to read instead. When I do, I choose a gardening program or I will borrow a dvd from library which has great selection of the older, light-hearted tv series I enjoy.

Love the photo of you and Lula ... joyful!

  13. We watch very, very little TV (other than Padres baseball during the season). I like to watch one local TV news show and get my basic world news update from PBS Newshour. I stopped watching network TV in 1975 when my father moved us to Germany on military orders. There was only US Army/Stars and Stripes TV in those days with no current American TV shows available. Seeing an Army Sargent delivering news about other bases was not too stimulating. I never really picked up the TV habit when I returned to the US for college and beyond. I have not watched a TV series in real time in 45 years. I suspect I have missed lots of cultural references along the way! We use our lone TV to watch old movies we have on DVD or sometimes buy from the On Demand cable. The cabin looks wonderful by the way. I envy you the swing on the porch! Your Lula stories always make me laugh.

  14. Love Lula! And congratulations on your cabin! Your cottage will be your forever home, but the cabin will be an important part of your life for twenty years or so. :-)

Television? My "big screen" is 22" with a secondary of 20", but I have not had television reception since 2010. Both televisions are used as computer monitors. I chose to terminate cable when I downsized, after realizing I rarely watched it. Unfortunately, the broadcast signal is blocked by taller buildings and a mountain (really a very large hill, but named a "Mountain"). Have tried various single and omni-directional antennas, but none work. An elevated antenna is not an option. Occasionally pick up a signal, but nothing reliable.

Internet tends to be my primary source of news. As others have noted, it's nice to be able to sift through the fluff and opinions to actual information. I don't subscribe to any streaming services. If I didn't watch cable, I probably won't watch streamed programmes. lol I do have a DVD player and a small collection of DVDs. They tend to be traditional musicals--Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Lowe, et al, some Disney, including The Cheetah Girls, HSM and Camp Rock (BFF's granddaughter was five when the first TCG aired--just a little influence there). Primarily light stuff. One season of several TV series were gifted to me. The Virginian is my favourite. Definitely not PC and usually more dramatic than my typical fare, but each episode is almost a mini-movie. Excellent productions (occasional continuity issues) by master craftsmen, many of whom were blacklisted and worked under different names. I vaguely remember the series when I was young, but probably starting around the fifth season.

I really am more of a reader than watcher. Fairly eclectic taste, with non-fiction dominant. Definitely nothing gorry or that might cause nightmares! lol

  15. I love the look of the cabin, cant wait to hear and see all of your adventures there.

We have a TV but are selective in what we watch. I don't mind watching our Gardening Australia show and other interesting health shows and documentaries that I learn information from. Mostly though, I am a you tube addict, so much real life on there, not hyped up false news.

Have a wonderful week Stephenie xxx

  16. Looks like a wonderful cabin for a break away. We don't watch a lot of TV at all these days choosing to craft or read instead in an evening. This does change a little when the bad weather sets in but we do pick and choose our programmes.
