Recovering

I deleted the post about Lula's attack.  Last Tuesday she was mauled by two vicious dogs.  Animal Control is working on it.  Her wounds are healing well.  I had some scratches,  scrapes, and nicks, as well.  We are both relieved it wasn't worse.

We've been staying home at the cottage.  Until these dogs are impounded or euthanized, I don't feel safe staying up at the cabin.  It really shook me up.  I've been making a lot of mistakes and wrong turns when out driving.  It's strange how a close brush with death affects you.  The owner of the Rottweiler and Mastiff is still not answering the door.

Thank you for all of your comments and support.  I've been talking with friends and neighbors, and that has helped a lot.  It will be a relief once we have the hearing, and Animal Control decides what to do.  I am trying not to think about all of the "what ifs"...

I am so thankful that I didn't sell my cottage.  I have so many kind neighbors here.  You can't put a price on that; I've lived here for over twenty years.  I chat with many of my neighbors on a daily basis.  That routine is what makes a community.

Thank you for your comments.  They add so much talent and energy to the blog.  Please comment in English.  I'm sorry, but comments with links will not be published.  If you enjoy the posts here, please share them.

  1. Oh Stephenie, I’m so sorry to hear about the attack. It’s such a relief that you and Lula were not seriously hurt.

I’m sure everything will be alright very soon, and you will get to enjoy the cabin. It’s good that you have very caring neighbors and friends.

Most probably this is not the first time those vicious dogs attack someone. Shame on the owner for letting them loose. I really hope they will have to pay for any medical expenses, vet bills due to this attack.

    1. Hi Nil, Fortunately I have money in my emergency fund for situations like this; I have paid the vet and doctor bills. I am more concerned about preventing this from happening to anyone else.

  2. It's natural to be shaken after something like this, Stephenie. I do hope that both you and Lula will be able to feel safe and confident to walk again soon. I love our little neighbourhood community here too. This morning, when out walking our Sir Steve dog, we waved to the folk who live two doors down and stopped for a chat with our back neighbour who was also out walking their dog. Everyone is really friendly here and it makes all the difference. Take Care. MegXx

    1. It does make a difference, Meg. I still feel sick from the incident, but exercising helps.

  3. I'm glad that Lula is healing and you are both recovering from the attack. Glad to hear that Animal Control is handling things. Something like the attack is a shock to the system. Good idea to stay close to home and take it easy. Give Lula a gentle hug from me, please.

    1. Hi Cherie, I do want to enjoy the cabin, but everything up there is very open and wooded. After seeing what I saw, I would never take a chance with those dogs again. They are ferocious, like wild animals. It's too risky.

  6. Such a terrible event for you and your dog to experience. So glad you have support from your neighbors at this time.

They need to get those dogs sorted before something else happens. And most of all so you can enjoy your cabin.

    Take care Stephenie xxx

  7. Thank you for updating. I missed your original post and wondered what had happened. Being attacked is a horrible thing. It makes you feel so helpless and you're probably suffering a bit of PTSD. Very natural.
A close friend was attacked two years ago while taking his daily walk. He had to have rabies shots because the dog's owners would not comply with showing the dogs had had their shots. He wound up with a lot of medical bills and is still fighting with the owners in court for some relief. They actually mocked him in the lawyer's office and tried to say the attack was his fault even though he was on a public sidewalk simply walking when it occurred.
My thoughts are with you and sweet Lula as you deal with the aftermath of this nasty incident. May you both heal and have peace! Bobi

    1. Hi Bobi, I've had to deal with a person like that, too. There are always those who will defend the abuser, and blame the victim. My bills were not high, and I am not planning on hiring a lawyer to get reimbursed. I want the neighborhood to be safe and for noone else to be hurt or killed by these vicious dogs. There are a lot of small children on that street.

  8. I was so upset to read about the attack on sweet Lula and you. Horrible dog owners! You are wise to let the authorities handle the situation. I hope this negative event does not tarnish your love of the new cabin, but it is understandable that you will need some time and space to recover, both physically and emotionally. Thinking of you both!

    1. Thanks Anita. It was a very close call. I had only read about pit bull attacks and other breeds who kill animals and people. Watching it was horrifying. We were so fortunate.

  9. Oh that is just so horrible. I reread your last few posts and could not figure out how w=she had been injured. Your heart must still be racing! Poor baby, poor mom! Glad you have friends to talk to and hopefully those dogs will be taken care of. Sending both you and Lula positive thoughts.

  10. Hi Mereknits, She was attacked by a Rottweiler and Mastiff that were running loose. I thought they were going to kill her right in front of me. Thank you for your concern.

  11. I pray Lula continues to heal. The bites look very serious. Very shocking to have that happen, especially to such a good innocent dog! Glad you weren't hurt by those dogs. I sure hope something happens to protect you in the future from those two dogs. If this is their first attack, or if they did have a previous attack and it wasn't reported, maybe nothing will happen. I hope that isn't the case. Every state has different laws. But in the end, it is the owner's responsibility to see to it that their dogs don't hurt anyone. I wish everyone would only have good dogs like Lula. Andrea

    1. Hi Andrea, That's true. She is so sweet. The home insurance companies here will make an owner give a vicious dog who has bitten away. If they won't, they drop their insurance.

  12. Poor Lula, and you. What a frightening and heartbreaking experience. I had my dog attacked by another 20 years ago, still scares me. Blessings and hugs to you both. Pam

  13. Hi Pam, Thanks for reading the blog and for commenting. I know what you mean. I don't think you are ever the same after it happens. At least we are both here, and able to enjoy hiking again. I hope you are well.
