Knitting Socks During the Lockdown

I finished the socks today.  Phew!  It was so satisfying to get something done.  I plan to send them to a woman in Pennsylvania.  She is the founder of the dance studio, Steps on Broadway.  I posted a photo of them on Facebook, and she complimented me.  "Wow! Some socks," she wrote.  I taught at Steps when I was in my twenties.  It was a highlight in my dance teaching career.  It's a spectacular studio.  This is the first time they have had to close in forty years.

I planted some celery that I re-rooted in the window sill.  It has sprouted tiny leaves and stalks, so I hope that it gets healthy and strong in the soil.  I saw an earthworm as I was covering it with mulch.  That's an encouraging sign.

What are you doing to stay sane during this time?  Have you been cooking, baking, or knitting?  I am practicing yoga in the evenings to calm down.  Reading all of the death tolls makes me feel sick to my stomach.  I have to force myself to shift my focus and stay positive.  I made an appointment with an agent to buy Long Term Care Insurance.  It's seems even more important now.  Are your affairs in order?

  1. Your socks look great! I like their length and the ribbing on the top of the foot portion, too. It's very kind of you to send them to your friend. I've been doing a bit of this and a bit of that - some knitting, some sewing, a bit of gardening, etc. to keep myself busy. Take care and stay safe!

  2. Beautiful socks, and they look cozy! So neat about the woman who founded the dance studio! Small world! I've learned (in my older age) that it is important to keep our minds at ease as much as we can; and just tackle problems as they come. Keep well! Andrea

  3. Love the socks, There is nothing like the warmth and cosiness of hand knit socks.I hope your friend loves them.
I stopped counting after 40 pairs and have switched to Toe up so I can make boot length without playing yarn chicken.๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿงถ I find it more straight forward with heel shaping too.
There is so much beautiful sock yarn, I hope you will keep making them for yourself to bring joy and rotate the wear to avoid mending.๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ท

    1. Hi MargaretP, Yes, I will make another pair for myself. I have lots of sock yarn. I may do a pair that are patchwork, using all of the leftovers that I have in my stash. I have tried toe up, but prefer top down; it's easier for me.

  4. Thay are lovely. A much more interesting pattern than the one I use. Lhe recipient is a very lucky lady!
I'm sewing, knitting and studying at the moment, plus the usual things. Not baking though - it's only me here and I'd have to eat it all. No, no, no! :-)
It's all very worrying, isn't it, and too easy to dwell on overly much. Yoga is a good idea.
    Stay well.

    1. Thanks Joy. When baking cookies, I only put one dozen in the oven. I store the raw cookie dough in the fridge. That way the cookie tin is full for a week. My neighbor used to freeze her cookie dough in loaves. She would slice them up to make oatmeal cookies.

    1. That sounds very therapeutic, emw. I just love knitting and crocheting. Mending my socks and sweaters has been a great way to pass the time, too. It feels better when those tasks are done.

  6. Those socks are beautiful and you made such a good job of them. I think I might at last get around to finishing off a pair that I started months ago. Maybe I need to sew some little WIP bags so that I can keep the patterns and needles together. It would give me another little project to keep me busy.

  8. I LOVE those socks Stephenie, such pretty colours.

I am keeping busy gardening and cooking. We are not in complete lock down, just advised to stay at home unless essential for us to go out. Social distancing i the new normal.

So devastating what is happening in your country, I can imagine your anxiety. Good idea to spend time doing things to calm the body down.

    Take care,
    xTania

  10. I’m still enjoying your blog, Stephenie. It’s nice to see how others are doing during this time. We tried a new recipe today, made necklaces, and now the kids are cleaning out the little pond in the garden. Wonderful to have a home and things to do! So glad to see you’re doing well. ๐Ÿ’—

  11. Those socks are very pretty. I’m sure your friend will be so happy to receive them.

I tried growing store bought celery several times, but though rooted, they didn’t do well In the ground. I should give it another try, when I have celery again.

Today I made a loaf of no knead bread. It was delicious.

    1. No knead bread is amazing. I've been thinking of making a loaf, too. That's too bad that your celery didn't root. I have seeds, as well. We'll see how it goes...

  12. Your socks are lovely, Stephanie. I imagine they are warm and soft and will be a lovely gift. Knitting is such a calming craft. My shawl is getting a little bigger each day. I just do a few rows here and there when I'm not gardening or baking or reading or walking the dog. MegXx
