My Mom's Kindle

It's been over three years since my mother died. When I returned home to sort through her things, my father gave me her kindle. His voice broke as he explained to me, "She read this thing all the time. She had over two hundred books loaded onto it. Maybe you would like to read them." I thanked him, and agreed. She had been an invalid for several years, and every time I went to visit her, she was reading her kindle. It was like her companion.

At first I had trouble understanding how to use it. I played around with the buttons, and  started reading one of her books. It was one of the most depressing things I had ever read. It took place in Chile, and was very political.  I would force myself to read it, and then feel terrible. I eventually put the kindle in a drawer and forgot about it. I decided we must have very different tastes in reading material.

Last night I was chatting on the phone with a neighbor. She had seen me reading a library book on my porch, and mentioned that she really liked her kindle. I confessed that I had one, but didn't really know how to work it. I didn't understand what the symbols meant. She offered to help me, and gave me the phone  number of Amazon.com. I didn't realize that it was through Amazon.

This morning I decided to call them and see if I could get it transferred into my name. The man on the other end of the line talked me through it, and it was fairly fast and easy. I was surprised at how quickly I was able to grasp how it worked. He was a patient and helpful teacher. I started reading another book that my mother had bought. This  one is about dogs, and I absolutely love it. Everyone in my family loves dogs.

I see now why my mom and my neighbor were (and are) so enthusiastic about their kindles. I remember that Oprah Winfrey used to rave about hers, too. I think it will be great to take traveling. It's light, and it will save me storage space in my home. I just ordered a new book from Amazon.com and had it delivered. It feels exciting to have a new toy. (Especially now that I know how to work it.) How about you? Do you have a kindle?

    1. Hi Laurie, Yes, I think she's probably happy that I'm reading this book. It's excellent. It feels good to be using the kindle, too.

  2. I don't have a Kindle, but I read ebooks on my iPad.
I haven't used a Kindle (though I have Kindle app on the iPad). I can download free books from the library. Most can be opened using apps called Overdrive and Libby, but I some books have Kindle version as well.
See if your library has ebooks, Stephenie. They are free and most libraries have huge online collections. 😊 Mine even bought several ebooks that I recommended and automatically put them on my reading list.

    1. Hi Nil, I was just researching Overdrive and Libby. I have downloaded books from the library on my desktop, too. That's great that your library bought books that you recommended. I will look into it. Thanks Nil.

  3. Hi! It is neat how your neighbor got you to use the kindle and your mom's books. My husband always enjoys his kindle. He drops them easily so he has gone through a couple. I prefer books. I don't read much and I really should as I used to read a lot. I guess I don't like having to put on bifocals! Andrea

    1. Hi Andrea, I love books, too. I didn't expect to like the kindle, but I really do. It's more of a sentimental thing. That was my mom's companion for years. She was home alone for several hours per day. She had her dogs and her kindle.

  4. I got my first Kindle in 2011. In those days Kindles were very simple. It was a Godsent to a business traveler like me because it was so easy to carry and so light weight. And because it is backlit it does not have glare on the glass. My original Kindle was accidently left on an airplane (too many gin/tonics on board?) so I had to buy a new one in 2016. I replaced the original with a $79 version barebones Kindle and all of my downloads were available to load on the new Kindle at no additional charge. That made me very happy. I still use the Kindle, but Steve reads the Amazon downloads on his Ipad. The vast majority of what is on my Kindle are free books or classics that I can read over and over, starting at any point. I think it is touching you are enjoying your mother's Kindle.

  5. That's wonderful, Anita. You made me laugh about the gin and tonics! So funny. It's nice that Steve can read them, too. I have read ebooks on my desktop, but I really love the kindle.

  6. My son is trying to persuade me to buy one.. I love books though and like to hold a 'proper' book. I can see that a kindle would be great for taking away on holiday though. I am an early riser but hubby likes a lot more sleep than me... I might reconsider and take a look at buying one just so that I have something do read that isn't going to take up a lot of space in my bag.

    1. I think the mini iPad would work well, too. I am really enjoying the kindle, though. It is very compact and light. It's convenient to read on the bus and the train.

  9. Have just discovered your wonderful blog
I too have become a recent Kindle convert: my darling ginger cat died last month, and my husband is encouraging me to travel ( she was ill for some time and I would not leave her)- I agree it is great for traveling but will always enjoy the smell and feel of a good book
As others have said, what a lovely way to reconnect with your Mother
