Glasses For Reading and Knitting

This morning I sent off this pair of booties to a new Etsy customer in North Carolina. I'm pleased with how they came out; I had a little trouble with the stripes. I was using scrap yarn from the last pair of socks, and had to rewind the balls to get the stripes to match. I learned that  the hard way. I think they're cute, though. She told me that she likes blues, greys, and browns.  I think this will work, and they look great with light blue jeans.

Today I did some grocery shopping. I look forward to cherry season each year, and found Ranier cherries on sale for .99 a pound! I was thrilled.  I also got a replacement piece of oval glass for a vintage picture frame, and walked around our nevitalized downtown area. The city has poured a lot of money into new shops, restaurants, and theaters. It's quite impressive. They are hoping to make it like Santa Barbara. None of them are chains. I will have to go back and take some photos. It has a whole new vibe.  I love the originality of it.

I ordered my first pair of prescription glasses from Costco last week. I normally use readers, but I think these will make it easier to see the tiny stitches on my knitting needles when I make socks. It will also help with reading books and patterns. Train and bus schedules tend to have tiny print, and I am looking forward to doing more traveling as I get older. How about you? Do you wear prescription eye glasses?

  1. Hi Stephenie. We have some huge cherry trees in our neighbourhood and the fruit is there to be picked. On a good year my friends and I can pick enough to keep me us cherries for the whole year and they don't cost us a penny. I have worn glasses since I was a young woman.

    1. Wow! That's incredible, Cherie. I planted a couple of cherry trees one year, but they didn't make it. Maybe I will try again. I love cherries.

  2. The booties are cute! You did well to get the stripes to match! I'm sure your client will be pleased with them.

You found a great bargain on those cherries! I'm happy to get the Bing cherries for $.99/lb. Rainier cherries are almost always more expensive than that!

Ah, yes, I have to wear prescription glasses to both read and to drive!

    1. I hope so, Bless. Thank you. The cherries were on sale at Valley Produce. They weren't listed in the weekly flyer, so I was pleased to find them.

  3. i wear prescription glasses all the time for ordinary site & i also have prescription 'readers', i can do my knitting without any glasses but to sit & read a book i have to have 'readers' to see the print for so long; i'll probably eventually have to wear them to knit too but for the time bring going without is okay.

    1. Thanks Jules. A lady from one of the knitting groups I used to attend gave the yarn to me. It's from the 1980's!

  5. Love those booties Stephenie.

I have found a pattern and some needles so I am going to try knitting socks for the first time very soon.

I need to wear glasses these days and am in need of a new pair as my eyes are playing up. Next week I will make an appointment to get them checked. I purchased a magnifying glass that hangs around my neck to help with close work and tiny stitches.

    1. Hi Tania, Good luck with your socks. I took a sock class to learn the short row heel for my first pair. I love Winwick Mum's sock patterns and videos. My mom used to use a magnifying glass, too.

    1. Hi mm, That's what I'm hoping. I think my vision was also a bit blurry from the jet lag. Sitting on the porch in the sunlight helps, too.

  8. Oh yes, have had glasses, since I was in school. Just for "seeing the chalk board" back then. Then it moved to wearing them all the time. Don't remember when... And have had bi-focals for some years now.

I have fun with frames. Got a pair of large, round, black frames, like ladies in NYC wear! Took me so long, to get my Optometrist to stock them. Then I got a pair of round, pink frames. It's comfortable to change frames.

Never tried contacts. Regular glasses are fine, with me.

Hope your new ones, will be wonderful.

And yes, everything is being printed in smaller and smaller print! Oh mercy!!!! ,-)))))

  9. Oh yes, I wear prescription lenses for reading and computer work. I have for years. My right lens is worthy of Mr. Magoo, but the left lens is much less. I need a slight correction for distance. I am eager to see the photos of your town! It sounds charming.

    1. Hi Anita, I wear readers for those things. I think the new glasses will be excellent for knitting with fingering weight yarn. It's just too much of a strain to see it. I had trouble in the class because the stitches looked blurry. I will take the photos today.

  10. Good decision ordering the glasses!
You will find you are more relaxed knitting and will have a lot less body tension that you didn't realize that you had.
Think of them as a high quality tool.

    1. Hi jill, Yes, I could feel that it was stressing me out. My vision is still 20/20, but that's looking at a distance. I hope your eyes are doing well.

The socks are so sweet-they would look good with pjs or jeans! Nice work.
I started with prescription glasses in my 40's and still depend on them. (I went in and asked for glasses so I could knit well again!)

  13. I have prescription glasses. I had to get them because I started having difficulty reading tiny letters after I turned 40. Mine are varifocals so I really had to adjust. I still don’t like wearing them all the time.

I’d love to see photos of your town. 😊
