Enjoying The Beach and The Backyard Orchard

Lula and I lay under the pomegranate tree.  It's like a cave.
I spent a couple of days at the beach this week.  I decided to drive when the traffic is lighter, eager to enjoy the gorgeous ocean.  I have many happy memories of living Santa Monica.  I used to rent a room on Ocean View Avenue when I was a teenager. We spent a lot of time at the beach in those days. My friend and I would regularly  meet at 6:00 a.m. at Cafe Casino.

I cruised down PCH and found some free parking near the little beach houses on Ocean Avenue. I just love those sweet abodes, and always fantasize about owning one. I bounced down the stairs, headed through the tunnel, and traipsed across the sand.  I spread out my towel near the water; surprised that there weren't many people. Walking along the water towards Malibu, I watched  the seagulls and some other unusual looking  birds. One was brown, and he was bobbing in the water, like a duck. He had a huge beak, resembling a fishing net. It may have been a brown pelican.  He looked so content on his own.

There was a beautiful sailboat inching its way along the ocean. I kept pace with it as I walked.  The view was exquisite.

I stood in the water for a while, and watched the waves crashing. There were a couple of little boys boogie boarding, and they were laughing and having a terrific time. I think I want to get myself a boogie board.  It looks like so much fun.

I laid in the sun for a while, and buried my feet in the sand.  The sound of the waves was so meditative. When I got home, I felt like I still had  the ocean  inside of me. The sea air is so healing. I felt like a new person! I plan to enjoy the beach on a regular basis.  I brought a packed a lunch and a cup of coffee in my travel mug. It was a wonderful day, and it didn't cost me anything but the time and effort.  Have you gone to the beach this year?

  1. The beach is healing to me too. I haven't been for a few years. I'm due! The repetitive sound of the waves is meditative, like the ticking of a clock or the sound of a crackling fire during a snow storm. The ocean is colder up here. First time I went up here, I dove right in like I would down there and jumped right back out 😂

    1. It really is, Lady Locust. The water here is very warm. I love it. As a child, we tried going to Half Moon Bay, but it was very cold and windy.

  2. Sounds like you had a great trip to the beach! No, I haven't gone to the beach yet, this year. I really should make the effort to go. Looks like you have a well-established pomegranate tree. :)

    1. Hi Bless, Yes, I planted that tree twenty years ago. The beach is heavenly. I just joined Breeze Bike Share, which will be fun. They have a station along the beach bike path.

  3. That sounds absolutely blissful. I live fifteen minutes from the beach but rarely visit. I may just do that a bit more often

  4. It sounds like you enjoyed a wonderful day, Stephenie. And I understand the feeling being by the ocean gives you.
Like you, we always take along a picnic and a flask, so a day out costs us nothing. X

  6. We are landlocked, except for a few lakes, but they are not the "real thing," like the ocean beach. We so miss it.

Years ago, before my husband's eyesight deteriorated, every autumn we drove over to Cape Cod, for a few days. Over time, it seems, we saw every inch of it!!!! :-) We always stayed in B & B's in beautiful old homes. A major part of the whole experience. And of course enjoyed the beach!

Which by that time of year, we had mainly to ourselves.

Nothing like it!!!!! We miss it so!!!!!! -sigh- But have lovely memories.

Go while you are young! Go! Soak up the experience! Make memories! :-)

  7. What a wonderful day you had at the beach. Santa Monica is so lovely. It surprised me to read that the beach was not too crowded yet. We had lunch at Dana Point last weekend. That was our first beach trip of the summer.

    1. Hi Anita, Yes, I was surprised, too. I go further from the pier, to the beaches where the locals are. Dana Point sounds beautiful.
