Happy Father's Day 2018

Today is Father's Day in the US. I called my dad this morning and we had a nice chat. I have always felt like I was very fortunate to have my dad as a father.  He didn't marry until he was thirty-two, and to me he always seemed to be more mature and responsible  than the other fathers. He really enjoyed raising children, and was very dependable and reliable. It gave me a good foundation and a sense of security.

Yesterday I took my dog Lula to Piru Lake, and  rented a kayak. I wasn't sure how she would do. She sat in the front, and was just fine. At times she seemed a bit anxious, whining and shifting, and causing the kayak to tip. I was afraid that we might capsize, but then I was able to get her centered again. It wasn't exactly relaxing, but we still had fun. The kids who were fishing on the bank really responded to her. "Aw..." they would call out as we paddled by them and waved.

Afterwards, I drove around the area, looking at the campgrounds. We saw this beautiful scene on the way home. It reminds me of the old wild, wild West. The new hens have been laying eggs regularly. I am really pleased. They take turns using the nest box, and have really responded well to the extra protein that I give them. The hard boiled eggs seem to have an immediate effect. I think the bugs in the compost are giving them extra nutrition, too. Oh, and I finished knitting this dishcloth for a friend the other day. How has your weekend been?

  1. What a lovely tribute to your father. Good dads are such a blessing! My husband was 32 when we got married! So your words encouraged me.

  2. You are such a cutie pie with your dad! I want to try my dog out on a canoe (and kayaks...they are much more fun!). She likes our hammock in the backyard so I was thinking the movement of a canoe might be ok with her! We'll see if I have the patience to try it. Andrea

    1. Hi Selina, I didn't want to risk dropping my iPad in the water. Lula was moving around and it was kind of hard to balance. Hope your chooks start laying again soon. Mine are going bananas!

  6. I love the photo with your dad. My dad is still with us, but he is rapidly failing. He will be 90 in August. His mind is as sharp as ever, but he suffers from COPD (65+ years of heavy pipe smoking). He lives about 20 miles south of us. I fetched him yesterday and brought him up to the house for dinner and cherry pie. I bet Lula slept like a log after her exciting day on the lake!

    1. Hi Anita, It's difficult to watch a parent when their health is declining. How sweet of you to bring him to your home for dinner and a cherry pie. Yum! Yes, Lula is a good sleeper. It was a fun adventure.

  7. How lovely to have a nice chat with your dad, you are so lucky, I have never had a dad, he remarried when I was a small child and never wanted to know me, so sad really. I hope you don't mind me following again(it's Marlene) I know I have chopped and changed blogs so much in the last few months, and know some bloggers are fed up with it, but the last one wasn't right for me, this is my last blog now, I am just going to post as and when I feel like it, I have always enjoyed your blog so I hope you don't mind me following again.
    Best wishes
    Marlene.

  9. That's a lovely photo of you and your Dad. We don't celebrate Father's Day until September in Australia. I havent seen my own Dad in more than twenty years but I do get to celebrate my father in law on that day instead. It's great you can go exploring with your dogs and enjoy the outdoors together. Meg☺

  10. Hi Meg, Yes, she's a great companion. She loves to ride in the car. I didn't realize Father's Day was on a different day in Australia. That's too bad about your dad. Glad to hear you enjoy celebrating with your father in law.
