Replaced the Shower Head Myself

Yesterday I went to the hardware store to replace my shower head. I took the bus to save money. While I was in the aisle at the store, I realized that I had left the bag  with my old shower head in it hanging on the front door.  I was in such a rush to get to the bus stop that I almost forgot to wear my bike helmet, too.  I had to ride back home and retrieve it. I returned home by bus, and drove back in the car with Lula. So much for saving money.

The woman who works there, (and owns the shop with her husband,) recommended that I just get the replacement hose, since I thought the head was still okay. My intuition told me to buy the whole thing, but I ignored my instincts. (which I shouldn't have done.)

I came home, watched the Youtube installation video, and tried to replace it. No luck. The plastic ball had a crack in the washer.  I attempted it three times and gave up.  I made a third trip to the hardware store and returned the hose in exchange for a new Water Pick complete shower head kit.

By this time I had plenty of practice, so I quickly installed it. I felt like an old pro.  It works perfectly. There was a time when I would have thought that I needed to hire a handyman to do this for me. Not anymore. It is very satisfying to fix things yourself and to save the money.  I love Youtube. Do you do any of your own home repairs?

  1. i used to do my own but am still paying off this house & insurance doesn't allow repairs done by amateurs so i have to use tradesmen plus these days i don't have any tools & my brain doesn't comprehend half the things I want to get done, so safer to use people who do.
glad you're able to do some of your own maintenance, though shame about the double up to the shop, ohhh well, still would've worked out cheaper than getting a plumber in; i have to get my shower head & tap washers redone too!
    thanx for sharing

  2. Wow! Well done! I'm impressed! If I had tried to change the shower head, I'd probably have a fixture that would spurt water in all directions! LOL! The short answer to your question is, "No"! Which is why I have so many broken things in my house!

    1. Thanks Bless. It feels so good to get things fixed. I think you could do this repair. It was easy, after watching the video a few times.

  3. Stephenie you are so much my kinda girl. I too love You Tube. I won't touch gas or electric but would seriously consider attempting to fix most other stuff.
I bought the most gorgeous Violet scented soap from a craft stall the other day. My whole house smells of violets each time I open the bathroom door. I thought of your soaps when I bought it

  5. I guess practice makes perfect! And the internet is helpful. That is great you are learning so much about keeping up your house. A shame you had to go back home, but if it makes you feel any better, that happens a lot to me too! Andrea

    1. It was worth it, Andrea. Sometimes I get ahead of myself. I was rushing to the bus stop.

  8. Oh yes, I think it creates such a sense of independence and builds confidence. I do all of my home repairs, diy projects... you name it. I even do all computer, website and blog stuff too, which was a thorn in my side at one time. It was truly the hardest thing I ever had to learn all by myself. Nowadays, I know there is nothing I cannot do. Well done, and I love your flower. Smile. Much love Raquelxxx

  9. Good for you, Stephenie, and yes, youtube is a marvel for all the DIY videos. I can now take my oven door off and pull it apart in 3 seconds (or so it feels like!) whenever I want to clean inside the glass panels, courtesy of youtube. A bit of a drag, though, you needed to traipse back and forth to get all your bits. A lot of the small repairs around the place are really easy when you give them a try. Some things just take a bit of practice.

    1. Hi Pipistrello, That's very impressive. You are right. I need to make a list of everything around the house that needs to be done, and study the Youtube videos.
