Lately I have been feeling very tired early in the evening. For some reason, in winter I start nodding off at around 7:30 p.m. I decided to just go with it and head to bed early. I have been getting up at 4:30 or 5:00 each morning.
It is exciting to be up before most of the rest of the neighborhood. I make coffee, prepare breakfast, write in my journal, and read books. I take Lula out while it's still dark, and reward her with a treat. The sun eventually rises, and we watch the color of the sky change color. It is a very peaceful, magical time. I love the vibration of nature at this hour.
How are you sleeping? Do you go to bed earlier at this time of year?

I've just commented about this on another blog. I have a habit of waking early too, usually around 5.00, sometimes earlier. It leaves me feeling exhausted early in the evening, so I end up going to sleep early and so the cycle continues.
ReplyDeleteHowever, it does mean I get to enjoy my coffee in the peace and quiet of the early morning. X
Hi Jules, I actually quite like it. It's such a special time of the day, the early morning. I think when the days are shorter, we just get tired much earlier. I always have...
DeleteYou wake up very early. I used to get up at 5.30 am when I was a kid, because the school bus came at 6.30 am.
ReplyDeleteNow I go to bed late, and wake up late. I think I should be more disciplined and go to bed early and wake up early. I do get about 7 1/2 hours of sleep, but I know it's nice to be able to wake up early. Rarely when I do that, I feel much more productive.
Wow, a 6:30 a.m. bus must have felt very early. I feel more productive on this schedule, too, Nil.
DeleteWe too wake between 4-5AM. I'm usually good until 8-8:30PM. You probably just needed a little extra sleep.
ReplyDeleteThe older I get, the earlier I nod off at the fire. It's just so comfortable to lay on the couch and read. My dad and aunt were the same way...
DeleteI think maybe your sleep cycle is more the way that we should be! I am finally sleeping better now....the change of moving (3 years ago) has finally worn off! I don't like daylight savings time....although I haven't decided which is best before or now. Andrea
ReplyDeleteIt's a lot like the animals. I've noticed that my pets go to bed before dark during the winter. It feels more natural to me.
DeleteI am glad you were able to get a good night's sleep; sounds like you are getting your 8 hours of sleep. I tend to be a night owl! It is usually 2:30 or 3:00 a.m. when I head off to bed and I often don't fall asleep until 4:00 a.m. Then, since I don't have to wake up early to go to work, anymore, I sleep in till about 9:30 a.m. or 10:00 a.m. Even when I was working and needed to get up at 5:30 or 6:00 a.m., I would still stay up till 1:30 or 2:00 a.m.!
ReplyDeleteYes, you do sound very nocturnal, Bless. That would be murder for me to try and stay up that late...
DeleteI do get tired earlier in winter when it gets dark so early. By 6:30 p.m. it seems like 9:30 p.m. Good for you to adjust your schedule dramatically; I am making smaller adjustments for bedtime and getting up time.
ReplyDeleteHi Terra, Yes, that's exactly how if feels. I prefer to eat dinner in the late afternoon, as well. My schedule doesn't affect anyone, so I can listen to my internal clock.
DeleteI usually go to bed at 10 pm and listen to the radio for a short while. My evening routine is unchanged during the darker months but I find mornings more difficult, not enjoying getting out of bed when it is still dark
ReplyDeleteHi Christina, Thanks for reading and for commenting. That's interesting about wanting to stay in bed when it's dark. I guess I'm just in the habit of jumping out of bed, making coffee, and watching the sun rise...
DeleteWe usually watch the news at ten and then head to bed. We are thoroughly fed up of BREXIT news though so have given up watching the TV unless something interesting or entertaining is likely to be on.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch the news either, Cherie. I love to read before bed, though.
DeleteI have never been a good sleeper. I am always awake before 4am and typically get out of bed around 5am. I like to go for my morning walk about 6am and enjoy the birds waking up and see the sunrise. Of course-getting up that early means I typically go to bed about 9pm.
ReplyDeleteOh, you are an early bird, Anita. I'm impressed with your 6:00 a.m. morning walks. Wow!
DeleteI am one of the world's early risers and so I am always asleep early each night. That just seems to be my natural rhythm and, if I try to stay awake longer, I just get so tired! I love the very early morning, the quiet before the world wakes up is such a peaceful time. Like you, I potter about, read and take our dog for a walk too. MegXx
ReplyDeleteI can't stay awake either, Meg. It's worth it to me to get up at the crack of dawn. I just love the vibration at that hour.
Deletejust caught up with all your posts (from early Nov) glad you had a relaxing holiday & it was enjoyable!
ReplyDeletea mountain lion! that is so exciting! most animals struggle during harsh winters or summers, we are having an extremely dry summer here & it is sad hearing about the number of wildlife dying from lack of water & food.
can't wait to see your alpaca blanket, is that the one you started last winter? did you finish the german short row sweater you were making? been missing you on the forum lately, hope all is well
have a wonderful xmas & a safe new year
thanx for sharing
Hi selina, I am reknitting the pink alpaca blanket that was on my bed. It got several loops from Lula's tags getting caught in it. I haven't gotten back to the sweater with the short rows, but I will. That technique was a bit tricky for me. (shadow wrap short rows.) I need to practice it. Yes, the mountain lion was incredible. They seem to have plenty of food and water up there in the wilderness. I think he was young.
